Life in Niigata

Sea, mountains and rice fields. A look at Niigata through the seasons, and what it is like to call it home.

National Geographic names Niigata a "Best of the World 2027" destination

National Geographic has selected Niigata Prefecture as one of its 25 "Best of the World 2027" destinations, its annual list of places worth visiting in the year ahead, chosen by its editors around the world.

The editors describe Niigata, on the west coast of Honshu, as a place where Japan's contrast between the modern and the traditional is vivid: a bullet train running between flooded rice paddies.

They chose it for its unique art festivals and centuries-old fermentation traditions, which offer a fresh way to explore a region that has received little attention until now.

Niigata through the seasons

Spring

March – May

The snow melts, the cherry trees bloom, and in May the rice paddies are flooded for planting, turning the plains into mirrors of the sky.

Winter

December – February

Deep snow in the mountains and inland snow country brings ski season and sake-brewing season. The coastal plain around Niigata City gets far less snow, which is worth knowing when choosing where to live.
